Photographed above is one of my favourite dresses; a Claudie Pierlot lace number with a cut-out at the back and an above-the-knee length that makes it perfect for evening wear. However, I love to make my clothes work just that bit harder - particularly when I am investing in more expensive pieces - and thus I also team this cashmere cardigans and cropped jumpers for daywear. Once your make-up, accessories and footwear are more suited to day-time, dressier pieces need not be strictly reserved for evening.
These are some of my recommendations on what to pair with any LBD:
-A relaxed, but short, knitted cardigan or fitted cashmere jumper in grey.
-A chunky gemstone necklace or other colourful costume jewellery.
-For Winter, fine black tights, and for Summer, tanned bare legs.
-A pair of ballerina flats, ideally in a colour which compliments the colour(s) of the necklace.
-A pashmina or a silk wrap-scarf in either a colourful print or block colour (other than black).
-A fine vintage or antique gold necklace.
-A pair of sling-back heels in either black satin or suede.
These are mere suggestions; the wonderful thing about a simple piece such as a black dress is that it acts like a blank canvas where you can unleash your creativity. Adding colourful but elegant accessories can transform any piece into an eye-catching outfit, but the right styling will ensure that you do not detract from the beauty of the dress itself.
